As part of a wider, multi-million pound Terminal Expansion project at Birmingham Airport, we were appointed to undertake Fuel Farm Enabling Works. The works involved the relocation of fuel, de-icing and Unit Load Device (ULD) facilities, creating a concrete hard standing to facilitate space for the fuel farm infrastructure.

Works were undertaken ‘airside’ requiring specific security passes and clearance arrangements. Our investment of £500 per head, per annum in training, coupled with fully understanding Birmingham Airport Ltd (BAL)’s requirements beforehand allowed us to train personnel and gain security passes in advance of works commencing, with no delay to programme.

Engaging with our supply chain in Early Contractor Involvement was key, particularly regarding time sensitive materials e.g. concrete.

To ensure the materials could be delivered to a high-quality standard and pass through security checkpoints in time to be used correctly, our Site Manager was responsible for coordinating deliveries on site.

Liaising with BAL security personnel, allocating time slots and providing vehicle passes/escorts ensured each delivery could pass through security in an efficient manner, allowing construction to continue as per our programme.

The location of works meant managing the risk of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) was vital, ensuring the works area could be handed over to the Airfield Operations Manager upon completion of each shift. Our directly employed Gangers acted as FOD Managers, checking vehicles to ensure no debris could fall onto the airfield, maintaining good housekeeping on site and checking mechanical sweepers in end of shift clearance procedures.

Communication was essential to the successful delivery of the project, from BAL security, Project Managers, Designers and Airfield Operations. Our directly employed Site Manager was responsible for coordination of works on site, whilst our Contracts Manager communicated with BAL in regular progress meetings to achieve ‘right first time, every time’ delivery.
