Following severe winter floods, Northern PowerGrid awarded Whitehouse Construction the contract to deliver a flood protection solution to the boundary of the critical strategic control facility on Gelderd Road in Leeds.
In order to protect the facility, a sheet piled wall was installed which acted as a flood barrier, running the complete length of the building. These works were undertaken in carefully controlled phases, enabling all power cables serving the facility to remain unaffected by the piling works, ensuring that no outages took place.
This wall was then dressed with brick and cast concrete capping, whilst retaining its flood protection purposes.
A reinforced steel flood gate was fitted across the main access which completed the watertight seal around the perimeter of this facility in times of flood. In order to retain pedestrian access and egress, which is manned on a 24 hour basis, an emergency access stepped gantry was installed to provide safe pedestrian routes over the flood wall.
In order to control surface water flooding from accumulated rainfall, Whitehouse installed a storm water pumping station with wet well within the protected compound.
A new parking facility was also required within the site which was constructed, alongside all flood protection measures, including white lining, lighting and drainage systems.
Works were completed within budget and ahead of programme to the complete satisfaction of the client.
