Whitehouse delivers New Compost Production Facility
in record breaking time for Vital Earth Limited in Ashbourne

Each year the UK sends about 30 million tones of waste to landfill sites. It is estimated that between one third and one half of this could be made into compost. With the ever increasing demands for re-cycling of waste and in particular compostable materials, Vital Earth Limited developed a system that reduces the time taken from four months using traditional methods, to less than two months for green waste to be turned into compost.

Vital Earth Limited identified a suitable site for a large capacity facility in Ashbourne and approached Whitehouse to develop a design and build scheme based on Fast-Track construction methodology.

With a non-negotiable delivery date on 1st September 2006, the project works commenced on site in late April 2006.

Contract Value : £2.5M
Contract period : 19 weeks
Site Area : 30,000 sq.m
Building area : 10,500 sq.m

The completed works were handed over to Vital Earth in two phases, the first in May 2006 and the final and principal area on 1st September 2006.

The new facility can take both kitchen waste and green waste and has the capacity to treat up to 60,000 tons per annum.

Chairman of Whitehouse Brell Ewart said
"To say that this project was not designed six months ago and here we are today handing the keys to Vital Earth demonstrates the capability of Whitehouse and what can be achieved in a very short time frame when client and contractor work together with common aims and appreciation. The delivery team, including the clients staff, designers, and our own staff are to be congratulated on a successful, on time, and on budget completion, and how rewarding its is for us to construct a facility that will serve the communities of Derbyshire and surrounding area for many years to come."
